Shadow Dungeon Gameplay — Combat, Loot Loop & Endgame
What Shadow Dungeon gameplay is like: 2D hack-and-slash combat, the clear-loot-rebuild loop across 160 levels, affix drops and builds, and the Greater Rifts endgame — with launch videos.
The core loop: clear, loot, rebuild
Shadow Dungeon is built around the classic hack-and-slash rhythm. A level throws rooms of monsters at you; you cut through them with class skills, open the loot drops, and either equip the upgrade or salvage it. Every few levels a boss gates progress, and the gear check is deliberate: if a boss walls you, the intended fix is usually a build adjustment — a new affix, a rune swap, a talent respec — not a grind wall.
The numbers behind the loop are the reason it holds up: weapons roll more than 1,000 affixes across five categories, and those affixes grant 2,400 weapon skills. Two builds of the same class can play completely differently depending on which skills their gear grants, which is where the “one more run” pull comes from.
- Story arc: 160 levels · 30–50 hours · character finishes at level 99–100.
- Loot pool: 1,000+ weapon affixes · 2,400 weapon-granted skills · 15 class sets.
- Permanent power: talent skill runes; temporary power: weapon-granted skills.
Combat feel: what you actually press
Combat is real-time and horde-oriented: class skills on short cooldowns, packs that melt under area damage, and elites or bosses that demand movement. The four classes play genuinely differently — Necromancer minions fight for you while you cast from range, Holy Warrior absorbs with shield-first kits, Sorcerer clears screens with area damage, Archer wins by range and positioning (the classes page compares all four with their community tier placement).
Launch-week coverage and community threads agree the difficulty sits on the easier side for ARPG veterans; the fun is in build-crafting rather than demanding execution. If you want to judge the feel yourself, the free demo and the credited playthroughs below are the honest way to do it.
From story to Greater Rifts
Finishing the story is the start of the loop, not the end. The Greater Rifts endgame opens four difficulties — Normal, Master, Nightmare, Inferno — with rift-exclusive rewards: 370 talent skill runes and 6,800 equipment skill runes, plus better rare-item rolls at higher tiers. Between runs, the blacksmith enhances gear (capped around +20) and rerolls affixes, and respecs stay cheap (about 8,000 gold after the first free one), so experimenting is expected, not punished.
- Rift difficulties in order: Normal → Master → Nightmare → Inferno.
- Rift-exclusive loot: 370 talent skill runes · 6,800 equipment skill runes.
- Blacksmith: enhance to about +20, reroll affixes that don't fit your build.
